Energy efficiency in the data center is a business issue as well as an environmental issue for our customers. Data centers around the world are reaching their capacity on power and floor space and are facing ever higher energy costs. At the same time, corporations are working to reduce their environmental impact by reducing energy consumption. EMC's energy efficiency advantages help our customers meet their business needs and their environmental commitments.

Green Team

EMC has been a leader in power efficient storage platforms since the 1990s. Today, our Green Team, a cross-functional group of engineers, spearheads the development of new technologies that increase storage capacity and performance of our platforms while consuming less energy per terabyte.

EMC's software capabilities optimize the energy efficiency of data center hardware. Our Power Calculator accurately estimates the power consumption and cooling requirements of EMC configurations, as well as weight, floor space, and sound levels.

Services

EMC also offers Energy Efficiency Services to our customers to analyze and reduce power usage and data center cooling costs. This service helps customers use the right hardware and correct software to maximize energy efficiency while meeting business needs.

Reducing our energy consumption

EMC implements best practices in energy efficiency in our own data centers. A 2007 upgrade to our Westborough, MA data center will save EMC over $3M in costs over the next three years and prevent almost 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide (from electricity generation) from being emitted in the same time period.
